Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is one well armed lamb contesting the vote. Thomas Jefferson

the games we play

A lot of people think they can be on top in this world playing the same game that’s been played for the past 50 years.  And you know what, 50 years ago that game worked.  A great company called IBM grew huge playing that game.  They did so well at it that in 63 years they were able to hit a billion dollars of business, something nobody thought could be done within a single generation.

But things are changing.  Technology is altering the way we live.  A couple years ago a Sophomore in college created a company that in 2 years he was offered one billion for, and then, 2 years later, it was valued at 15 billion.  Stop.  Think about that.  In the same generation that all the CEO’s and suits at IBM hit 63 billion, which nobody thought they could do anyway, one sophomore in his dorm room hits 15 billion in only 4 years!  Pay attention.  Regardless of what you think or what you are comfortable with we’re all playing a completely different game.

Here’s the challenge.  Most people refuse to stop playing the old game.  We can’t play two games at the same time and win both.  In fact we probably won’t win either.  Yet there are still countless numbers of young people getting into massive debt to go to college so they can get a piece of paper that says they can play a certain position in this old game.  Don’t get me wrong.  Education is a great thing.  I want my kids to go to college.  But don’t rely on your college education to help you get ahead financially.  It doesn’t do that anymore.  50 yeare ago it did.  But things have changed.  The vast majority of new college graduates are working at the same low end jobs they would have had anyway.  And they don’t even make enough to get out of debt!  Think about it.  We are specializing our skills and narrowing our options to fight even more people for fewer, lower paying jobs with huge coroporations that are failing anyway.

Is there something wrong with this picture?
